Ingredients

Make It

Step 1

Preheat oven according to cake mix package instructions; prepare cake mix batter using water, oil and eggs. Prepare three 6-inch cake pans with baking spray and parchment paper. Divide cake batter between the pans and bake according to package instructions.

Step 2

Cool cakes on cooling rack to room temperature.

Step 3

Combine butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and salt to make the icing in a large mixer bowl. Mix until whipped, light in color, and fluffy in texture. If desired, use food coloring to color the icing prior to use.

Step 4

Remove cakes from their pans. Using a 3-inch cookie cutter, cut the centers out of two of the layers of cake. Cake centers can be re-purposed for another recipe.

Step 5

Combine the curls, morsels, and sprinkles in a small bowl. Set aside.

Step 6

Place one of the cake rings on a serving platter. Place 4 dollops of icing on top of the ring, smooth the surface, and then place the other cake ring on top of the bottom one. Fill the center hole with the sprinkle mixture. Place more icing on top of the second cake ring, and smooth it like the bottom layer. Place the top layer of cake (uncut), on top of the rings, to create the top layer of the cake. Use the remaining icing to ice the exterior of the cake as desired.

Step 7

Refrigerate for 30 minutes prior to serving until cake is firm. When cutting the cake, be sure to cut a wedge that includes the center of the cake, to reveal the sprinkle surprise.

Substitution Tip

* One can substitute store-bought vanilla icing for the cake icing in this recipe.
