Bobbing for apples is some good clean old-fashioned Halloween fun.
That chill in the autumn air means it’s apple harvest time. So head on over to your local farmer’s market and pick up a bushel of crisp tart Macs. Then swing by the hardware store and grab a plastic or aluminum garbage can or a big wide beer bin because apples, a watertight bin, and few gallons of H20 is all you’re going to need to kick start some traditional apple bobbing action.

The More, the Merrier
The more heads a-bobbing, the more fun we’re having, so it’s not a bad idea to make bobbing for apples the main event at a play date. If you’re concerned about head banging, you can have the kids wear their bike helmets—or simply run the bobbing in heats of two or three kids bobbing at a time.

Directions

FILL a trashcan with water and apples.

SET the rules. When you say go, contestants stick their heads in the trashcan. Contestants’ hands must be behind their backs at all times. The winner is the first contestant to emerge from the can with an apple in her mouth.

CROWN the winner the Apple King or Queen with a construction paper crown. The King or Queen gets to decide what’s for dessert.

Materials

Apples
It’s not called bobbing for mangoes.

A Garbage Can
it’s a metal bin, make sure there are no sharp edges.

Water
Bobbing for apples is an outdoor activity. Water is going to get sloshed all over the place.

Towels & Dry Clothes
If your neighbors’ kids are participating, make sure they bring a towel and an extra shirt.

Cool Prizes
What’s the point of winning if you don’t win anything? Note: Halloween bat cookies make excellent prizes.

If you have a local orchard, make a day of it and take your kids apple picking first thing in the morning.
