Indestructible Flaky Pie Crust

If you're like I used to be, you shy away from making your own pie crusts because they are awful looking, awful tasting, and embarrassing! NOT ANYMORE! Here is a recipe that will open the door to making crusts for pies, quiches, and all sorts of recipes calling for a pie crust!


3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups vegetable shortening, cold
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
5 Tablespoons icy cold water
1 large egg, beaten


In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and the salt and mix together, then cut-in the flour mixture with the vegetable shortening until it is crumbly and sort of grainy, do not overwork, as this makes a tougher pie crust. Add the vinegar, cold water, and egg, and mix together well. At this point, you can use the crust immediately, or you can wrap it in plastic wrap and chill it to use at a later time.
Hint: If you are making this recipe in the summertime or if your kitchen is too warm, after you cut in the flour and shortening, you can place the bowl in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to chill it again before adding the other ingredients.
