Best soup ever

This is the perfect soup in cold weather, hearty and tasty, even the leftovers. Really good served the Hoosier way with coleslaw and fried potatoes and corn bread.

Ingredients

1 lb. dried Great Northern Beans
2 chicken boullion cubes
1/2 lb. ham chunks (or to taste)
2 tsp. chili powder
2 tsp. minced dried onions
2 tsp. garlic granules
2 tsp. black pepper
water
salt to taste

Directions

Pick over the beans and discard any broken ones. Rinse the beans in cold water then cover with fresh water in a dutch oven or 5 quart pan. Let soak 4 hours or overnight. Drain and cover with fresh water and bring to a boil over medium heat, reduce to a simmer. Add the ham and boullion cubes and cook 1 1/2 hours, then add the remainder of seasonings. Cook an additional 1-2 hours until the beans are tender and thickened slightly. Check about every 30-40 minutes to see if an additional cup of water is needed. Add salt to taste at the end of cooking.
