Chocolate caramel bars

Serve these with a scoop of vanilla ice cream

Ingredients

1 pkg German chocolate cake mix
1/2 cup butter softened
1 egg
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 (14 oz) pkg caramels (unwrapped)
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Heat oven to 350 Mix cake mix (dry) softened butter,
and egg until mixture reaches a crumb texture .

Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the crumb mixture. Press the remaining crumb mixture in a 13x9x2 inch pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray .Bake until crust appears dry ,10 to 12 minutes .Cool for 10 minutes .

Heat butter, milk, and caramels over low heat , stirring occasionally until caramels are melted.

Pour caramel mixture over crust sprinkle with the nuts ,chocolate chips and reserved crumb mixture .

Bake until crumb mixture appears dry and begins to brown 25 to 30 minutes. cool Loosen edges of bars with spatula .Refrigerate until caramel mixture becomes firm about 1 hour. Cut into 2x1 1/2 inch bars .

you may replace the nuts with butterscotch chips
