Ingredients
1 loaf French or Italian bread, sliced in half lengthwise
1 stick butter or margarine, melted
3 cloves [3 teaspoons] garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper [optional]
Directions
Preheat broiler to highest temp. Remove all but the lowest oven rack.
Blend garlic, salt, and pepper[s] into butter by stirring; do not whip.
Lay bread out on a cookie sheet, crusts down.
Spoon or brush butter mixture onto bread.
Using a sharp serrated knife, cut each of the bread halves into eight pieces. Leave loaf, opened and cut, on cookie sheet.
Place under the preheated broiler for 3-5 minutes. Make sure it is on the bottom rack of the oven, so the garlic does not burn.
Broil until golden, remove from oven, arrange in a basket lined with an attractive towel or napkin, then with aluminum foil.
Bread will stay warm throughout the meal, and you can wrap any leftovers in the foil for storage in the refrigerator overnight.
