NOTE: IF USING CAN PEACHES, DRAIN AND USE ONLY 1-1/2 C. SUGAR. FRESH PEACHES USE 2 C. SUGAR.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Put the butter in an 8-inch square baking pan, and place in the oven to melt. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, 1 C. of sugar, nutmeg and milk to form a batter. Mix the fruit with the remaining 1 C. sugar. Pour the batter over the melted butter, then drop the peaches evenly over the surface. Bake for 1 hour. Serve warm with heavy or whipped cream. Serves 6 - 8.
