Saute onions in the butter until tender and separated into rings.
Put into a greased casserole and top with the cheese and pepper.
In a sauce pan heat the soup, milk and soy sauce until well blended. Pour over the onion mixture and stir slightly.
Top with croutons or crumbs and bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until browned and bubbly.
