Beat eggs and set aside. Cream shortening, add sugars, add most of the beaten egg, reserving a small amount for brushing on top.
Sift together flour, soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. Mix together water and molasses.
Add flour mixture alternately with the liquid to egg, sugar and shortening mixture.
Fold in raisins and nuts and refrigerate 30-60 minutes.
Grease a large cookie sheet. Make 4 rolls, placing them across width of sheet, flatten slightly, and brush with reserved egg.
Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, cool slightly, cut into bars. Makes 24 hermits.
