Cook together sugar, corn syrup and cream of tartar in a heavy saucepan till it dorms a soft ball. Beat in 1 Tablespoon butter and 1/4 teaspoon soda, this will foam up. Pour over 4 quarts apopped pop corn. Let cool for a few minutes, then butter hands and form into balls, when done forming all balls, wrap in waxed paper and twist ends so they will not get stale.
