This is an old recipe that my Dad used to make routinely.

Ingredients

½ c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 egg
1½ c. applesauce (thick & unsweetened)
2 tsp. Baking soda
½ c. boiling water
2½ c. flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp cloves
½ tsp allspice
1 c. raisins
½ c nutmeats

Directions

Cream shortening & sugar together.
Add to this the egg & applesauce.
Combine water & baking soda in a cup.
Sift together the flour, salt, cinnamon, cloves, & allspice.
Add water mixture alternately with flour mixture while mixing at low speed.
Blend in the raisins & nutmeats.

Pour into a greased 9x13 (8x12) pan.
Bake at 350° for 1 hour.

Not a NESTLÉ®-tested recipe.
