I found this recipe in a 1936 edtition of a General Mills cookbook that I bought at an estate auction recently.


2 C. sifted cake flour,1 t. soda, 1/2 C. butter or other shortening,1 1/4 C. firmly packed brown sugar,2 eggs, 3 sguares Bakers Unsweetened Chocolate, melted, 1 C. Milk,1 t . vanilla.


Sift flour once,measure, add soda & sift together. Cream butter thoroughly, add sugar gradually,and cream together until light & fluffy. Add eggs 1 at a time beating well after each one.Add chocolate and blend well. Add flour, alternately with milk. a small amount at a time. Beat after each addition until smooth. Add vanilla. Bake in two deep greased 9 in. pans at 350 for 25 min.
Carmel Frosting
1 1/2 C Firmly packed brown sugar, 1 1/2 C granulated sugar, 1 1/2 C milk, 2 T. butter.
Combine sugars and milk and bring to a boil stirring constantly. Then cook without stirring until small amount of syrup forms a soft ball in cold water. Add butter and remove from heat. Cool to lukewarm, beat until right consistancy to spread. If desired, place over hot water to keep soft while spreading.Makes enough to cover tops and sides of 2 9 in. layers or top & sides of 2 8x8x2 in. cake, or about 2 dz. cupcakes
