Mix sourdough, warm water and baking soda in a large pitcher or bowl. ( It will increase in bulk. ) In mixing bowl cream shortening ( Lard ) and sugar, add unbeaten egg and beat well. Add vanilla. Pour in sourdough mixture. Sift over this flour baking powder, salt and cocoa. Stir till flour is mixed in, then beat with spoon till smooth. Grease and flour 9-inch square pan pour mixture in. Bake in 350 degree oven 40 to 50 minutes,(Less is better)till done when tested with toothpick. While still warm, ice with soft Chocolate frosting, and cover with shredded coconut.
