The perfect treat for lunch boxes or after school snacks, these high-energy Chocolate Granola Bars are chock full of rice cereal, oatmeal, sunflower seeds, NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Morsels and peanut butter. From the kitchens of Margot LaFontaine of Fort Collins, CO.

  • 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
  • 1 1/2 cups puffed rice cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups quick oats
  • 1/2 cup flaked coconut
  • 1/3 cup shelled sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter

GREASE 13 x 9-inch baking pan.

COMBINE morsels, cereal, oats, coconut and sunflower seeds in large bowl.

HEAT honey and butter in small, uncovered saucepan until mixture just comes to a boil; reduce heat. Boil gently for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in peanut butter until melted and well combined.

POUR peanut butter mixture over chocolate mixture in bowl. Stir well to combine (morsels will melt). Carefully press mixture firmly into prepared baking pan with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Cover; refrigerate until firm. When firm, cut into bars. Store in a covered container in refrigerator for up to 1 week.

I made these for something different to put in my son's lunch. he's a very picky eater, so I wasn't sure if he would like them. He's asked me to make them again! They are delicious!

I like doing my own bars for work, instead of buying them, nice snacks for any time too.

Too good to be granola!

by C. Cindy , Tyler, TX on Sep. 2009

After I made these treats, I put them into a container to take to a group meeting. My son found them and proceeded to eat several before I found him. He said they were so good. I mentioned they were granola bars, and he said they were TOO GOOD to be good-for-me Granola. Then I told him that they really weren't granola and I would make him some more if he'd stop gobbling up my group's treat. Sneaking good stuff into a teenager is difficult.

Choco. Granola Bars

My kids liked these a lot! I made them for lunchboxes, but I think that they may get all eaten up for dessert tonight. I didn't have coconut or sunflower seeds, so I used extra oats. Used 1/2 rolled oats and 1/2 quick oats. But when I make them again I will use more PB and less honey. And maybe milk chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.
