Double Chocolate Brownies

Try one of our "desert safe" recipes to send to your loved one overseas. This recipe has been tested in our kitchen and does meet Middle East guidelines, as well as U.S. Postal Service mailing regulations.


  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels, divided
  • 2 large eggs


PREHEAT oven to 325º F. Grease 9-inch square baking pan.

COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.

HEAT shortening, sugar and water in medium saucepan to boiling, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in 1 cup morsels; stir until smooth.

ADD eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually add in flour mixture. Stir in remaining morsels. Spread into prepared baking pan.

BAKE for 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Cool completely in pan on wire rack; cut into squares.

I was wanting to find a recipe for brownies that had a stronger chocolate flavor than the boxed mixes. My husband is a brownie fanatic, and this hit the jackpot!!! We love it!

I have made these brownies for years. The recipe that I have uses 1/3 Cup butter though, not the shortening. I make them for co-workers and friends for their birthdays. They are very disappointed if I don't make them.

I altered the recipe and replaced the Chocolate Chips with Butterscotch Chips and frosted with a white buttercream frosting. They were out of this world. I also doubled the size and used a 9x13 pan and cooked them for 40 minutes. They were perfection!

Wonderful Brownies

I had planned to bring brownies to some friends home to eat while we played cards, I went to my cupboard only to find I didn't have a mix. So I went online and searched brownie recipes and found this simple and wonderful brownie recipe. I always keep chocolate morsels on hand -- so it was great for me, no trip to the store get a mix -- they are so good and easy to make, I might just be done with those mixes, the moistness and flavor just can't compare, thank you for sharing this with all of us bakers.

These are really pretty darn good. I double the recipe and bake in a 9X13 pan for about 40 minutes. I like to use plain semi-sweet chips in the batter itself, and then use the peanut butter/chocolate swirl chips to add in at the last bit.
