Ironing Board Chocolate Chip Cookies

December of 2007/Christmas cookie giveaway

I bought a new condo near my family in Harrison, Ohio; and decided it would be nice to bake 15 dozen Toll House chocolate chip cookies for them for Christmas. I had not moved much of my furniture to this condo because I was still living in Columbus, Ohio at the time. BUT, I had borrowed an ironing board from my sister; and I don't have that much counter space; and, remember, I'm making 15 dozen cookies. Where to cool them all? A few kitchen towels and wax paper and, YEP, instant cooling rack. Please see the attached photo. I believe my family laughed more about the ironing board than any other story that holiday. I captioned the picture when I put it in my scrapbook as "You might be a redneck..." My tip for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe in the world; as in Toll House? Use DARK brown sugar. Yum, yum.

While in college, sad that I couldn't afford to see my parents for my birthday, I was hungry for a taste of home. I walked to the nearest grocery store (3 miles, bought a roll of Toll House Dough, and made the entire roll, a few cookies at a time, in my toaster oven. And they were delicious!I also made quite a few friends who were drawn to my dorm room by the smell of chocolate chip cookies!.

Mary C.from Idabel, OK on November 06, 2009 at 05:50:56

Mary from Idabel, OK: I thought you actually made cookies on your ironing board--I was disappointed to read you only cooled them there. Once in an emergency I made a grilled cheese sandwich using my iron and ironing board--now that's what I call ingenuity..

Hi, I hadn't seen this one when I wrote my 27 dozen macaroons memory, but I can see we share a common "cookie" bond; you can never have TOO MANY cookies! Ours was just a mistake in too much liquid ingredient & not wanting to waste the time & mess we'd already made!! Thanks for sharing..

Anna B.from Thornville, OH on September 24, 2009 at 08:00:35

Marlyn M, I hope that your still on here. I get so excited when I read something from someone thats from my Home Town, Columbus, Ohio. I have moved around so much, I'm not in touch with anyone. I'am 64 and I grew up in the short north. Granna2.

Anna B.from Thornville, OH on September 24, 2009 at 07:54:56

Ilove choclated candies and so does my husband and when the kids come over we have to put them up because they will eat all of those..

Cindy F.from Lapeer, MI on September 10, 2009 at 07:28:58

Oh my gosh, your story reminded me of the time we moved into our new house and still didn't have a kitchen table yet. Well I wanted to have brunch for my kids and grandkids, but no table. So my husband set up our patio set inside and I got out our ironing board to put some of the food on.Odd but worked, thanks for the story..

Ramona W.from Barlow, KY on August 21, 2009 at 10:07:16

I've used an ironing board as a cooling rack center many times in our old house. There just wasn't any counterspace at all in the kitchen. I had to be inventive on everything I baked especially at Christmas..

Tammy L.from Carrollton, VA on August 20, 2009 at 06:39:12

Your idea takes the cake, I mean cookie!!.

Tawnya V.N.from Pomona, CA on August 15, 2009 at 09:18:04

Love it... I would have never thought of useing the ironing board. Will do this Christmas!.

Rinda D.from Dalton, GA on August 14, 2009 at 07:03:34

Great idea...i will definitely keep that in my memory box for later..

Ruth E S.from Sterling, AK on August 08, 2009 at 07:11:26

Smart Lady! I've actually done that...when my now ex wanted no-bake cookies, he doubled the recipe not knowing that a regular batch would make about 90 cookies. We were living in a very small 1 bdr apt. So we used all the cabinet space, cutting board on a chair, ironing board, even cookie sheets on the back of the couch...hehehe...196 cookies..

Terri F.from Scott City, KS on August 05, 2009 at 02:29:11

I would never thought of that, now I know next time I need room.

Julie K.from Sugar Grove, IL on August 04, 2009 at 11:52:22

Samantha E H.from Sausalito, CA on August 01, 2009 at 09:09:52

Nancy P.from Marshfield, MO on July 30, 2009 at 09:01:07

that is hilarious! but sadly i'm think of breaking out the ironing board this coming holiday season because it is a really great idea for more counter space i never have enough so thanks.

Catherine M.from Lynnfield, MA on July 29, 2009 at 07:46:57

I'd much rather my ironing board be covered in cookies than have my dear husband's un-ironed shirts draped over it!.

Lois G.from Rolla, MO on July 20, 2009 at 08:45:56

My kitchen is very small when I have my family over the washer and dryer are in the kitchen and becomes the buffet.

Donna G.from Nixon, TX on July 11, 2009 at 09:48:18

Hi, What a great story. I would have never thought of that but my kitchen is small and not much space to get around, I will be using the ironing board too. Also liked the Redneck caption, one of my grandsons likes them and even calls hisself a red neck. he likes to hog hunt and fish and maybe he might just be a red neck even if is is a brown as a gingerbread. lol.

Mary E.from Cincinnati, OH on July 11, 2009 at 08:51:48

I once ironed in the kitchen and forgot to take down the ironing board. You'd be surprised how useful that extra counterspace can be. Just remember to cover it first so you don't end up with surprise stains on your best blouse!.

Dorothy W.from Houlton, ME on July 03, 2009 at 01:07:50

This will be one of the stories that gets shared at all of the family get togethers for years to come. This could have been on an I Love Lucy episode. Thanks for sharing!.

This a great story. I've heard the statement, "Dream House: one in which you can shower and flush the toilet at the same time." My dream house is one where there's actually enough counter space in the kitchen. Until I get my dream house, that ironing board sounds like a great idea. LOL.

I'm glad to see others are starting to use their ironing boards in this country. I have always found more than one use for my ironing board, I'm glad that others are finally finding out the many secrets to it's purpose. It also works greats for wrapping presents as well, who would have guessed something designed for clothes would be used for so many other purposes. Leave it up to women to find all the uses for a product, if it has a function or a purpose, we will find it..

What a great Idea!!! I don't have a kitchen...I have a glorified closit. I think whoever designed my house forgot to put a kitchen in, and as he was leaving he realized his error. So...he said to himself.....Well this is florida they don't need a coat closit. I will put the kitchen in here and call it a step saver. I am not amused. My son graduates from Notre Dame in May. The last time my husband said I could do whatever I wanted to the house after our son graduated I got it on tape. This has been a constant battle since we bought thew house 20 years ago I think I have been patient long enough.During the month of November I bake about 100 dozen cookies a day. Yes 100 dozen. When we first got to Florida I didn't know any of my husbands large Italian family. That went from a small tin of cookies andf candy to big half bushel baskets and then some. LOLWhen we get home from Our sons graduation this May...there better be a wrecking crew at my house ready to take down two walls.I am done waiting. LOL.

Mc B.from WINDSOR, ON on November 30, 2008 at 10:47:43

LOL I loved this one; I always knew there were other reasons to have an ironing board!.

I haven't used my ironng board in ages. This is certainly a good idea, as I don't have much counter space in my kitchen. This will certainly solve that problem, and my mother will not believe it!!.

Barbara S.from Winter Garden, FL on November 28, 2008 at 11:20:43

If I ever get the urge to iron, I think I will bake CCCookies instead. It is a great new use for a very little used item in my house..

Lisa K.from Hayward, WI on November 28, 2008 at 10:44:01

Precious and priceless!.

Rae P.from SANFORD, NC on November 25, 2008 at 06:45:35

I love it!!! Now I too can use my ironing board!!.

Belinda F.from Oquawka, IL on November 25, 2008 at 03:07:46

I don't know how many times I have ran out of room when baking for the holidays. I will have to remember this. All my ironing board does is collect dust, I don't like to iron!.

Great! You are so imaginative! And so much better to use an ironing board for cookies than for boring old ironing!.

Rose V.from Granby, CT on November 23, 2008 at 09:17:47

Cute story, and I agree with the gal who thought it was neat that you thought of your friends and family and baking Christmas treats even before the rest of your stuff was in your new home. You're obviously a "giver" and I'll bet you're a great baker, too!.

Marilyn D.from Shickshinny, PA on November 22, 2008 at 06:09:21

Loved the story. Isn't it amazing the things we can come up with when we have to improvize?.

Christy S.from Carmichael, CA on November 18, 2008 at 10:16:32

I found you unique solution very entertaining. I'm with others who said, "it beats ironing"!.

Patti M.from Irwin, PA on November 18, 2008 at 12:23:25

That is certainly the best use of an ironing board!!.

Christine F.from Mundelein, IL on November 15, 2008 at 09:29:43

I do think this is the best use for a ironing board. I think I will try this with my 5 and 7 year olds when the trays cool they can take the cookies off and put them on the board since it can be lowered to their height. I will just have to keep the dog out of the kitchen though, he's a sweet tooth..

Kathy G.from CRANFORD, NJ on November 15, 2008 at 07:33:31

Beats ironing!.

Cheryl G.from Ames, IA on November 15, 2008 at 07:02:45

I used that trick this past summer, when we moved in to an old farmhouse that was in desparate need of some TLC..

Kathleen H.from Eden Prairie, MN on November 15, 2008 at 04:19:26

I think it is great that you thought of your family first and baked even before you had all of your stuff..

Pat C.from Spring Hill, FL on November 12, 2008 at 09:46:30

I've never thought of that. Good idea! Thanks for the tip..

Deloris N.from Louisville, KY on November 12, 2008 at 12:11:11

Marilyn, Being a former Ohio gal myself, I admire your "where there is no way, make a way" thought process, by golly!! Necessity IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION. Funny how a story will be remembered because you were determined enough to do whatever it took............. Oh yes, I still iron, (I even have a wooden-footed ironing board , an antique?), but it does pile up sometimes. Deloris N. Louisville, Ky..

Cindi P.from Havana, IL on November 07, 2008 at 04:12:26

That's a great idea! I would much rather use my ironing board to cool cookies than to iron. ;-).

Mary Lou P.from Niles, OH on November 06, 2008 at 04:28:46

thanks for the idea. i make carmel corn covered with p.b. and choclate. i do enough for 20 people and that is a lot of corn of cookie trays. i cover my dining room table and kitchen table with it and try to figure out where to put more of it so the choc. and p.b. can set up on it..

Charmin A.from Monte Lake, BC on November 05, 2008 at 07:53:46

I like the "You might be a redneck...." caption. Very clever & approperate. Great way to expand counter space, too..
