Midnight Cake for Two

When my little brother and I were three and seven, we lost our dad to an accident. It drew us close and that closeness lasted through the years. By the time we were nine and thirteen, we lived in a small house mother bought. Mom went out every Saturday night and we counted on it. The moment the car turned the corner at the end of the block, we were already pulling out ingredients for a special chocolate cake. We worked together to mix and bake that cake. Mmmmmm, I can smell the yummy scent of it just thinking about it. By the time it came out of the oven, we already had glasses of ice cold milk and our forks waiting. We didn't bother with plates or frosting, we just cut the cake down the middle and dug in. Between us, we finished off every single crumb of cake and drop of milk. Then we cleaned up the kitchen, put everything away and made sure we were in bed by the time mother got home.

That was back in 1962. Throughout the years, my brother and I would drag out the memory of baking that cake together and we would both smile. Our spouses couldn't understand why neither of us would allow frosting on that cake - ever. My brother died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 51. I've only made that cake once since then. I went to a Hospice Grief Group after his death and we were asked to bring something that was special to our loved ones and us. Of course, I made and brought the Midnight Cake without frosting, to share with the group. They all loved the cake and my story. I haven't made the cake since but I'm thinking it's about time to drag that recipe out and give it to my 18 year old granddaughter. She really loved her great-uncle and has heard the story many times over the years from both my brother and I. Yep, it's time. I think it's also time I sent the recipe to his daughter, who just got married. It would be kind of like a gift from her dad and me.

I was touched and moved by your story. I hope that you daughter and niece love the cake as much as you and your brother did. Just remember that he is always with you still!

That is a wonderful memory. Nothing can replace your brother but it can bring him back into the hearts and memories of his daughter and neice
