One of my fondest memories of my Grandmother centers around one of her Christmas traditions...baking homemade bread and passing it out to her friends and family. She lived through the Depression and never had much, but she always loved to cook and her homemade bread was something everyone loved to receive. She used to stand in the kitchen for days baking loaf after loaf of her homemade bread. I can remember waiting for a taste--warm bread smeared with butter--what a treat! Once all the loaves were baked, she would load wrap them in foil and load them up in her car and deliver them to everyone on her list. It might seem like an ordinary tradition to most, but my Grandmother was crippled and what would have been a huge task to us must have been even harder for her, but she did it year after year. What a great woman. I miss her and her wonderful baking talents.

MY GREATGRANDMOTHER WAS A BAKER FOR PEOPLE TOO,WHEN I WOULD STAY WITH HER I WOULD WAKE-UP TO THE MOST WONDERFUL SMELLS. BREAD ,CAKES,PIES,
COOKIES. PEOPLE WOULD KNOCK ON HER BACK DOOR AND PICK-UP THE BAKED GOODS THEY HAD ORDERED. I WOULD WATCH AS SHE SLIPPED THE MONEY IN HER APRON POCKET. IT WAS THE WAY SHE PAYED HER RENT. I MISS HER SMILING FACE.

My mom as well as her mother-in-law(my paternal grandmom) made the best homemade bread as well as giant homemade cinamon rolls that my 2 children now grown fondly remember--and they are so thankful that I've carried on the tradition of homemade bread and rolls! Even though I have the luxury of useing a breadmaker as well as duplicating grandma Claire's recipes by hand.

Homemade breads are such a treat and woman like your grandmother gave from the heart when she overcame her disability to bake her special breads to share with family and friends.

I'm sure the bread was delicious but more important was the love in this womans heart that is so rare today.

There is not much better than good home made bread (or from a good bakery). When it's fresh, I don't even need butter, just slice it and eat it as is. Yum.

My maternal grandmother was a great baker as well. She had 14 children, twelve lived to adulthood and we would all go to her house on Sunday's for dinner. I miss her wonderful yeast rolls and homemade cakes and pies. She's been gone about 45 years, but I still have my memories.

I still remember the wonderful aroma of bread baking in my grandmother's wood stove. She had one of the new-fangled stoves but preferred the wood stove that she learned how to cook on. She had a bread pantry where she mixed up all of her dough. The flour was kept in a huge wooden bin.

I too have wonderful memories of Christmas at my Grandma's house as a child. I was also lucky to get to know her as an adult when I took care of her the last 10 years of her life just before she had to move out of house and into a nursing home. She passed away just a few years ago at age 94. I am lucky to have those memories from my childhood and adulthood when we had such wonderful conversations when I drove her on her shopping trips and to her appointments. I know exactly how you feel.
