My grandson and granddaughter came over to my house this past 4th of July to go on a picnic with me. In addition, I planned to bake a cake with my grandson, Jonathan. He very much wants to learn to cook and bake.[p]We baked a devil's food cake using a mix that we doctored up with pudding mix, extra eggs and oil, and vanilla extract. Jon did the breaking of eggs, added the ingredients, used the mixer, and poured the batter into an oblong baking dish.[p]He also made the buttercream frosting from scratch. He asked me if it was done after beating it for about 2 minutes. I told him that he was the baker, and that he needed to test it to see. He used a spoon to taste it, thought a second, then said "It needs more milk." He added a teaspoonful more of milk, beat it some more, then tasted it again and gave me a "thumbs up."[p]Jon frosted the cake, then used blue frosting to write "Happy 4th of July" on it. We put it in the refrigerator, and he ate a piece or two later to make sure it was good. I wrapped the cake up so he could take it to a barbecue they were having at his other grandma's house that night.[p]He was so proud of the cake, and his daddy praised him when he picked the kids up, and everyone loved the cake that evening, and more importantly, Jonathan received all the praise![p]The whole experience made feel so happy for Jon, and the fact that he and I (along with my granddaughter) now share another interest we love.

What a great story  Rosanne.  Hopefully your grandchildren will keep up their interest in baking.

 When my 2nd granddaughter was 8yo( she's now 20+ yrs, , she came to isit.we baked an angel food cake , poured blueberry  gelatin over it (while in the tube pan. When chiled & set we unmolded it, frosted it w/coolwhip garnished it w/strawberries; a RED WHITE & BLUE 4TH OF JULY  treat we enjoyed for daysCoolSharing things we enjoy doing w/  young ones is more than double the pleasure for me.
