When I was growing up, I only got to visit my maternal Grandmother, Granny, during the summer. We lived in Virginia(still do) and she lived in Bridgeton, New Jersey. During one visit, as she was making the cookie receipe from the back of the Nestle chip package, she never used any thing else, she realized she had no walnuts to put in the cookies. My family loves walnuts in chocolate chip cookies. But not me. That day, Granny used the only thing she had, pecans. I was hooked. Even now the memory of those melt in your mouth, perfect cookies brings tears to my eyes.
Every summer, I would get up early the first day we were there and I'd get to have those chocolate chip pecan cookies for breakfast. It was our secret. She'd get tickled if my mom would wake up too soon and giggle until she snorted. (That's where I get the "Granny Grunt") I remember my mom saying, "cookies are NOT for breakfast!" It didn't matter, my granny always spoiled her grand kids and she made me feel as if I were her favorite grand child, out of the 15 of us. But, she made all of us feel that way.
In this time of uncertainty, making thoses chocolate chip cookies with pecans brings back the smell of warm summer days, warm loving hugs, and a
Granny who never let me go with a treat. I miss her so very much. I think I'll go make some cookies.
