When I was 8 years old my family and I lived on a farm that was heated by a 'warm morning' stove. Sometime we burned coal in it but sometime we burned wood. We didn't have a oven/stove, our cooking was done on the 'warm morning'. Mom used an old metal box that was made for baking ontop of these burners. So,on one particular fall evening Mom decided to make a yellow cake with boiled frosting. It turned out superb, the cake was warm and the frosting was sweet. I can close my eyes and still taste all the love she put into it.

WHat a great memory of days gone by. Sometimes the simplest ways of cooking taste the best.

Wonderful memory. My grandmother cooked on a wood/coal stove. We should all know how to cook the low tech way since you never know what's going to happen. We lost power for a week after a storm and were glad that we had other cooking options.

My grandmother cooked on a wood stove too, not so long ago...in the 1970s and 80s. The best baked biscuits and cakes I've ever eaten. Thanks for taking me back.
