My mom was always baking, cooking, canning you name it she had probably tried it. When i was six years old she decided it was time to really start teaching me and the easiest way she knew was to hand me my favorite cookie recipe and tell me to have at it. I had helped her previously but i had never done it all by myself (she sat at the counter and watched but refused to help other than to point at the recipe). It was Nestles Tollhouse Chocolate Chip cookie recipe, she had clipped it off the bag and taped it to a recipe card and it was the one she had always used. My first cookies didnt turn out quite right, i didnt cream the butter and sugar together, just dumped everything into the bowl, but the next ones were better and they just kept improving. My Mom is gone now and i really miss her, but i kept her recipe box and i still make those cookies off the same stained and worn recipe card. It wasnt long ago that i started letting my son help me make them and it wont be long before i sit at the counter and watch him bake his first batch of cookies. Everytime i take that card out it makes me sad to know she'll never make those cookies for my birthday again, but she also gave me th skills i needed to make them for myself and my family. My husband says i make the best cookies ever, and i wont tell him my secret is a recipe clipped off the back of bag of morsels.

What a beautiful story! I have my mother's recipes saved also. I reminisce whenever i make one of her tried-and-true favorites. I also have lost my mother, but her memory lives on!

You shouldn't feel sad when you bake your special chocolate chip cookies. Tell your son where the recipe originated and share your secret how you started baking. His Grandma will be smiling from heaven watching the two of you continue a wonderful tradition she started.

I also have stained, worn recipe cards from my mother. They are my favorite recipes! My two sons (who are grown now) still love to help me bake mom's recipes and listen to stories of my childhood and being in the kitchen with her. They are still trying to figure out what the stains on the cards might be from. LOL

I started writing down all the recipes I use for my daughters. They are not old enough to cook but they love reading the stories and comments I make to them in the book.
