I spent only a few summer vacations at my grandma's house, but they were the best summers ever. Grandma had two cherry trees in her back yard, out by the fence that ran along the edge of her property, next to the alley. I was too little to climb the cherry trees, although I tried. I was never around when the cherries were being picked -- probably out playing with neighbor kids -- but I got in on the pitting and baking. Grandma pitted her beautiful red cherries by hand and baked them into her perfectly irresistible pies. I wish I had her recipe, even though I know it wouldn't be the same. It was Grandma's love that made the cherries, and the pies, so wonderful.

It was so great to read your story. In the backyard of the house I grew up in we had two cherry trees and my Grandma made wonderful cherry pies every summer. We picked and pitted the cherries and sometimes they had pucker power, they were sour. But somehow Grandma made the best pies. Wish I had a piece right now.
I have never had a cherry pie like the ones she made.
I think you know what I mean. YOu are right - they were baked with love.

Both my grandmothers had cherry trees, and yes there pies were the best. This summer I made cherry pies brought back many memories of long ago summer fun at grandma's.

What a great memory. It's funny, my grandma lived local but she also had a cherry tree and we used to pick the cherries. I can almost hear her yelling at us (lovingly of course), "If you don't stop eating more than you put in the bucket I won't have enough cherries left to bake any pies!". She always had enough left and her pies were delicious too.
