My grandparents moved to Florida in the 1980's. My Grandfather--Pappy to us---was a big practical joker. Pappy's favorite dessert was pineapple pie. I used to go and buy the little single pies whenever I could find them and ship them(along with Heinz yellow mustard)because nobody down south had either item. Like many senior citizens my grandparents ate a lot of their meals out at resturants. They went to one local diner about 2 to 3 days a week and became very friendly with the wait staff.Of course, when it was time for dessert my grandfather with a twinkle in his eye, would ask "Do you have any pineapple pie?" even though he already know the answer. They always told him "No. Never heard of such a thing." One day when they walked in for dinner, and the waitress walked up smiled and said "Frank, You'll be so happy, we have pineapple pie tonite." My grandfather was anticipating a long waited favorite after his meal and said several times "I can't wait for dessert!". With a big smile the waitress brought out Pappy's "pineapple pie". To Pappy's dismay it was a pineapple ring on top of a slice of white bread cut out in a circle topped with whipped cream! None of the wait staff had ever believed there was such a thing as pineapple pie and figured that they would finally get one over on the big practical joker. Being the good sport that he was Pappy sat there and ate the whole thing with a smile on his face. Pappy has been gone for 5 years now but everytime I see a pineapple ring-- I remember that night and a wonderful man that taught me the most important things in life are love for others and to fill your life with laughter.

If you have a pineapple pie recipe, why don't you share it on the swapped recipe page. My grandmother used to make chocolate pies. How I wish I had her recipe!

That's a very nice story about your Grandpop. I'm originally from PA too, the city of Philadelphia. Is that pineapple pie like a Tastykake item? I now live in Massachusetts and haven't seen anything like that here. Thanks.

Oh my gosh, PINEAPPLE PIE, it is my very favorite. My Mother use to make this pie for me every year for my birthday instead of a cake. Being young and foolish I never got the receipt from her and now she is in a nursing home and her memory has faded.
