I have an odd collection. I collect sprinkles. Yes, sprinkles, you know, like for decorating cakes and cookies. I have an entire cupboard dedicated to sprinkles. If you peeked inside you would see all kinds of pretty seasonal confectionery decorating items. There are jimmies of all colors and flavors, nonpareils in pretty shiny golds and silvers, multicolored teeny little balls, sugars in many colors, and then of course, the containers with 6 different seasonal sprinkles in one! Why on earth would one collect sprinkles unless they had some weird obsession you might ask? The answer is really quite interesting in my case.

Little story: When my eldest son, David, was a little boy he loved ice cream with chocolate jimmies on top. When he would ask for the jimmies he would say, "mommy, don't forget the ants". Okay, the child had a very good imagination and chocolate jimmies looked like ants to him so "ants" it was! I will never forget the time we were ordering at the Humdinger (best ice cream on the planet as far as I am concerned) and when the little gal behind the counter asked David what he wanted he said, "mint chocolate chip with ants, please". The look on her sweet little face was priceless needless to say and I informed her that "ants" were the equivalent of chocolate jimmies. No, social services did not show up at my house to check up on me and what I fed my children, thankfully and until David grew out of the "ants" stage I ordered his cone for him when we were out!!

Now, here is the point of the story.....that same little boy who called chocolate jimmies "ants" was unexpectedly killed when he was 18 years old. Soon after that I started with the sprinkle collection. Every single time I open that cupboard up and see the container of chocolate jimmies I smile. I smile because I am remembering my son and what a cool little kid he was. (He was a cool big kid too.) No wonder I collect odd things like sprinkles....they make me happy just like my David did!!
