I too was a sophomore in high school back in 1962. Our high school at the time did not offer Home Ec to my disappointment. One of my teachers, recognized my love of foods and encouraged me to major in Home Ec in college. I took her advice and was introduced to a whole world of foods and nutrition. This was the beginning of a rewarding career as a Dietitian.

I wonder if the current trend towards "standards based" education and high-stakes testing(both trends dictated by the federal government, not by the local public schools)is the reason fewer and fewer students are offered Home Ec and therefore graduate unable to cook for themselves. Nowadays, many young adults get most meals from fast food restaurants. Could the lack of education about healthy eating & food prep be one of the contributing factors to the rise of obesity in our great nation? I wonder... I, for one, loved my Home Ec classes, not only learning the basics of cooking, but of sewing as well. Ah, sweet memories!

I loved home ec, cooking and sewing. There were a couple of guys in our cooking class which I thought was a great idea. It's a shame it's been excluded from school, it taught a lot for life on your own.
