Yesterday I visited my grandsons at their house. they have a fig bush in their yard. They do not ever pick any of them. I had them to help me pick some of them and we filled up the dump truck they were playing with. They are ages 3 and 6. We went into the house and I washed the figs and mashed them. I wasn't sure if they would like fig preserves so I added a large box of strawberry jello with the sugar. I let them help stir it all up. I cooked it and jarred it. There was some left in the bottom of the pot. I made them some buttered toast and gave them the pot to clean. Oh, they had it all over their faces and arms. They had never had any homemade jam. That was a fun thing to do with them. They might have liked it better because they helped me pick them off the bush. Now they are talking about picking some more another day.

Isn't that always the way with kids? I think half the time, they don't like something because they are never given the opportunity to try it it or they hear one of their parents say "they don't eat that". Let them help you make something and they eat it just about everytime time. Then their parents are shocked! I don't have grandchildren yet but I watch my young nieces regularly and my sister is shocked when she learns about something they ate when they help me "create a masterpiece" as my older niece (a precocious 7 year old) likes to call it.

I allways told my boys to try something before they decided that they won't like it. Then if they didn't like it they didn't have to eat it, but they usely liked it. Know I tell my granddaughters the same thing.

My mom made the same thing when I was a kid. We called it "figberry" jelly.
