According to Barefoot Contessa, you should always break the eggs into a separate bowl.  Then if you get a bad egg, it won't ruin the batter.
Also, if you crack an egg and some of the shell drops into the bowl, you can remove it much easier.

I have been in the kitchen for 50T years and that still sometimes happens to me!  Tricky things those eggs can be!  She gets an A for effort!

I rinse my eggs and wipe them off before cracking them with a clean knife into a small bowl before usage in a recipe. I use a clean spoon if needed to remove eggshell

I remember when  my sister was teaching her twin daughters to bake.  She showed them about cracking the eggs  and when they were doing it she said she had to leave the room.  They were picking the pieces of shell off the egg before before it was totally open. She said if she didn't leave the room she felt obligated to help them and she wanted them to learn to do it themselves.
