In the 1950's when I was a little girl, my grandmother and mother enjoyed baking, and I often watched them baking cakes and pies in my grandmother's spacious kitchen. They were always trying something new. One day they baked some cakes and decorated them with white icing, then they decided to put different color stripes on them. They got out the food coloring and my grandmother made green icing while my mother made pink icing. My grandmother put some green stripes on the cakes with her icing, then my mother criss-crossed them with pink stripes. I thought they were the prettiest cakes I had ever seen. I remember Grandma asking what they should call these cakes, and my Mother replied, "Calico Cakes". I think that one day I shall make a "Calico Cake" for my granddaughters because I remember how happy it made me.

My daughters love to make cupcakes and use colored frosting to make different designs on the cupcakes.

When you do decide to make the calico cake please send in pictures. I'm sure we all would love to see it and it will give us new ideas. Thanks for sharing a great story and memory.

Great memories. From what you discribe, they should have had their own bakery. Or at least a road side booth

Yesterday my granddaughters (9 and 12) made pastel mints for Abbys confirmation. We had such a great time. I love doing things with them. We laughed so much. They make my heart so warm!
