Our Grandma was an excellent cook and baker. She worked in a restaurant on Main St for many years. When we were in grade school, once in a while we got to stop at Grandma's after school. Usually it was to get measured for a new dress or outfit--Grandma made all of our clothes growing up--four girls; but on a few occasions, it was just because we wanted to. There were a few times that Grandma had made bread, always from scratch. She gave us the best treat when she would cut us a slice of bread while it was still warm, then put butter and brown sugar on it. If I make bread, from a frozen loaf unfortunately, I sometimes make a slice of sugar bread which makes me think of Grandma and the special things she did for us.

OMG. I haven't had sugar/butter bread in a while! I think I'll have some tonight! Thanks for the memories and reminder!

That sounds sooo good.  I love fresh bread anyway... but to add sugar & butter.... YUM!

Great memory Diane.  I have special memories of my Grandma cooking and baking.  Fortunately she lived with us for many years and everything she made was special.  Grandma passed away in 1976 but the memories will live on in all of us.

My Grandmother was an excellent baker.  Her homemade bread and rolls were great, but she made the best cherry buns.  I remember going to her house when I was a kid and seeing the dining room table full of bakery.

We couldn't wait for Christmas at Grandma's house and savoring her home made sweet bread, with sprinkles of sugar on the top.
