I have a blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry cobbler baking in my oven.  I picked all the berries myself.  I love to go berry picking because it reminds me of all the wonderful summer days

That sounds so yummy Lisa!  That reminds me I still have raspberries from my garden in the freezer.  Looks like I may have to bake this week again lol.

I love these kinds of memories too. I want to plant berries. My son and his wife have berry bushes and freeze the ones they can't use.

I remember being a kid in the long-ago summer time ...... we wouldn't have jelly (and jelly was a staple - there weren't many meals that did not require a jelly bread) unless we picked wild black berries in the summer .... July in Missouri.
We wore long sleeve blouses, long pants and boots to protect ourselves from thorns and COPPERHEADS!!  lol lol
Once in a while mom got some grapes from somewhere but that wild blackberry was necessary.

Oh my goodness Nancy I had forgotten about the Copperhead snakes!  Plus I remember chiggers, do you?  I grew up in the Neosho/Joplin area and both the chiggers and copperheads were plentyiful!

good grief Lisa .... I remembered copperheads but had finally managed to forget chiggers!!
Copperheads were less dangerous than chiggers ....... We feared being bitten by a copperhead but knew we'd be bitten by 20-30 chiggers.
AND we'd get poison ivy!
Blackberries were so precious.

Then the fall came.  Each of is little girls was given a big "gunny sack" and we'd head into the thin - not deep - woods to pick up hickory nuts and black walnuts.  Hickory nuts - best taste in the entire world.

I have been using the blueberries I put up lately. I put up the last of the fig preserves Sunday. Now I have to wait for a while to pick more.

My brother and I used to pick blackberries in the fields behind our house.  We had to worry about the bees and hornets and wasps back there that always came after us.  I always helped my mother can them for the winter.

Growing up, as I did in N.Y.C; concrete sidewalks asphalt backyard, there were no berries or grass w/o going to CENTRAL  PARK by subway train, to see trees & grass; no berries anywhere!.
I was  one of the fortunate kids to go to "fresh air" summer camp.
Across  the lake( by rowboat or canoe or a hike through bear infested woods, & halfway up the Pennsylvania "mountinain" were blackberries & blueberries, growing wildSurprised.
Late  in the summer, I would get to go up the mounain w/ a few other priveledged campers with Industrial size cans [ on strings around our necks to go berry picking. By the end of the day; the cans were  full, the  berry bushes were nearly  empty; our arms, legs faces backs were swolen w/ bug bites and our bellies were nearly full of berries. We aw an occasional snake(type unknownUndecided)No rattle n thetaill; not a grass or garden/gater snake; perhaps it was a copperheard????????????.
The camp's nurse tended  our bug bites. We gave or berry filled cans to the kitchen staff. The entire  camp enjoyed berry jam; berry pies & berries n our pancakes /cereal for another week. & we slept well that night; proud of ourselvesCool  We had bravely gone here no other city kids had gone & done what no others would dare do.SurprisedWink We were heroes to the entire camp, living to tell the tale over50years later  , enourmous pride in ourselves for our youthfull adventure & accomplishmentInnocent

I remember picking berries, but I hated the bugs.  So I didn't do it very often.  I much prefer the pick your own strawberry patches I go to now.  They have very few bugs.  If there are any snakes, I have not ever seen them.
