My mom made delicious appleslices. She taught me to make them and I wrote her recipe and step by step instructions on a card. A few years later I wanted to make them by myself and mom got a little upset I didn't ask her to help. The next time I wanted to make them I called mom but she didn't answer. After a day of not reaching her my brother checked on her and found she had a heartache and was gone. I never had a chance to bake with mom again and my appleslices have never turned out as good as hers. I have many fond memories of mom and her wonderful baked goodies and all generations of my family ejoy my homebaked cookies and other desserts.

It's sad that your Mom is gone however you have some great memories to keep in your heart. Good luck with the appleslices. There are recipes that were handed down to me also and they never came out as good as the person who originated them.

It's true that some recipes, even though you have them written down step by step, somehow never turn out exactly the same as the person who they came from. My mother and I cannot make my Grandma's potato pancakes quite as good as she made them even though we have her recipe written in her own handwriting. I think the only ingredient missing is the love she put into them. But we will always have the memories, always remember that....

Isn't it wonderful that we have great memories to cherish? That is the one thing that makes us smile and go on.

The respones to Baking with mom were wonderful. Thank you. I do want to add that I make applesauce the way my mom did and my nieces, nephews, and greatnieces and nephews love it. I freeze it and they enjoy it through the year. Last year my nephew and his family asked me to teach them and they made their own. Another generation of happy homemade applesauce lovers.
