being a gramma, which only enhances baking joys, i am reminded of so many baking memories. this in itself is a gift.
one of our earliest memories is my inability as a new bride to bake - made a cake that was lopsided since i didn't know to cool it before removing form pan and then using granulated sugar in icing instead of xxxx sugar! now that was quite a cake but i did improve over the years and loved baking over actual cooking. while still learning tho, for one baby daughter's birthday cake i used sugar cubes soaked in lemon juice to they could light like a baked alaska but there were so many i almost set the kitchen on fire! for another birthday my husband helped to recreate a favored jewelry box of another daughter all in cake.
years rolled on and baking took on better results esp for holidays. one year i baked for 3 weeks daily to prepare for a Christmas gathering; family b-days, easter lamb cakes and my italian grandmother's easter bread to name a few. now grandsons are 17 and 12 and the youngest enjoys cooking and baking. i have at times enjoyed teaching a little of the science of ingredients when we choose a recipe.
these days tho my energy is more limited and i love having nestle's chocolate chips- all varieties in fridge for 'emergencies' and our most recent family favorite is the carmel filled refrigerator cookies. they have become a staple item. having lived overseas twice memories can include other cultural baking as well but over all it's our american treasured memories that warm my kitchen and my heart and the hearts of those i love . . ..

What a wonderful story. I just learned on Mother's Day that I am becoming a Grandma for the first time. I am beyond thrilled because we, my son & daughter-in-law have wanted this for a very long time. When my son called he told us they knew for 3 months but wanted to wait for a special day to tell us (and the pregnancy had reached a safer trimester). With his voice shaking he revealed it was going to be twins! I cannot wait to be able to bake for and with these two wonderful beauties about to become part of our family! My Daughter-in-law adnits she is not much of a cook or baker so I will thoroughly enjoy doing this with these new additions without stepping on any toes. I can't wait to have the memories you have described!

My husband often teases me that he was glad that he didn't marry me for my cooking because it definitely took me a few years to figure things out. However, after 15 years together, he also raves about how much I've learned in the kitchen and how much I spoil him and our 4 children with my cooking / baking. He may not have married me for my cooking, but at least now he gets to enjoy it.
