My mother always made the pies for Christmas, but one year she had to remain in Florida to take care of my dad. I thought maybe I can make the pies. The crust was going to be the challenge. I tried to remember all she taught me. After measuring all the ingredients, everything went into the freezer for about 15 minutes. Then I added the "ice water a little at a time". I had difficulty getting the dough from the table to the pie plate, but it was as flaky as Mom's.

Don't give up the more you do the better you get. Mother's are not with us forever that is why they teach their daughters and sons

My Mom made the best pies and the piecrust was flaky.  Use shortening and add a bit of butter also.  When mixed with the flour and it becomes dough, refrigerate it for a least 30 minutes and you will end up with super flaky crust.

I was happy to read that your pie crust was flaky. I guess you learned more from your Mom than you realized.
