I remember that my mom would always make the potato salad for summer get-togethers, because hers was the "very best". As many times as I watched her make it, I know all the ingredients, but it never comes out as delicious as hers.

Isn't it strange how many dishes are like that. But don't worry, we will have dishes remembered for us too.

I know exactly what you mean. We also have a recipe for potato pancakes from my Grandma that were absolutely delicious. She passed away a couple of years ago at age 94. We have the recipe, we watched her make them, but between my Mom, myself and my sisters (we are all accomplished cooks who help my sister in her catering business on occasion), we CANNOT make the pancakes like Grandma used to. My Mom even has the ancient cast iron Pan she used. What IS up with that? I guess it's one of life's mysteries that we'll never figure out.

We all know just what you mean! I have a recipe for rice pudding that was my mother's that I loved so much! I can't seem to make it the same as she did. I have tried to make it so many times that I now have given up trying. It will just have to be a "Baking Memory".

I've given out my potato salad recipe to many family members and friends and all of them swear theirs is not as good as mine.

It's the same with my mom's sauce. I watched her make it since I was little. I would even peel the garlic. But at 64, I have to admit that I was never able to make sauce that tasted like hers. Now my son is telling me that when he makes sauce - it is just not like mine. I guess that's how it goes
