With the upcoming holiday season I get into a melancholy since my mom passed in 2008. It's not sadness; I miss our talking about holiday recipes. I remember when she and I began discussing what to eat, what recipes we will be using, updating them, perhaps even changing the recipes up a bit. We were hoping the new season’s food menu would taste better with a fresh approach for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My birthday is in December and she used to make it special by making individual little Christmas tree cakes, I'll never forget how beautiful they were and not wanting to eat them so they could be part of our family decorations. We also made changes to the long standing "stuffing" the turkey. We stopped stuffing it! We baked the stuffing in a baking dish and we made twice as much so there were always leftovers for everyone. Later we learned it was better and safer not to stuff the turkey! Mom admitted she never liked the giblets my grandmother added to the stuffing, so we changed it to sausage added some water chestnuts and we made a new tradition. This change happened in the 70's, so now I am thinking about a new change to the stuffing, mom would have thought it was time. What do you do that you have changed in the menu over the years? Did you replace the giblets with something else? She grew up in Utah and she and my grandparents used to go to the woods and gather pinon nuts, maybe I’ll add them in tribute to her. I still feel mom is with me every day! The last change we added was in the 90's -at Christmas- and adding the cake "Yule log". Yum!
