Having an Italian background, my family always baked certain cookies for the Christmas holidays, always from scratch. My mother's recipe for one particular cookie was my favorite. It was chocolate with raisins, nuts, and cherries in them. The glaze for this cookie was powdered sugar,a little bourbon, and very little water. My mother baked enough cookies, as always, to be shared with extended family members and friends. She started baking early so that she would have plenty of time to bake other cookies and cakes. She made several dozens of this chocolate cookie and decided to hide them from "us kids" so she would have enough for Christmas. I found the hiding place! Oh happy day!!! I ate two or three cookies almost every night without anyone knowing. When the time came to put the cookies out, my mom noticed that the amount of cookies had gone down and she also noticed crumbs on the floor. She never said a word, she knew, without asking, who had eaten the cookies. She looked straight at me! I thought I was dead. She saw how scared I was. She started laughing and said that the look on my face was punishment enough. I never tried to find "cookie hiding places" ever again. I have children of my own now and she always tells them this story. To this day, when I eat one of these cookies, it brings back that wonderful memory.

Do your children look to see if you have hidden any cookies? :)

Hi  Sue! No, I can't hide cookies from them anymore. They are now 23 and 20 and it doesn't work anymore. I now  just leave a few out for them and freeze the rest for Christmas. We do try to bake together when their work and school schedules allow us the time (which is not often). I still enjoy the looks on their faces when I make their favorite cookies. Hope you and your family have a great holiday season!

What a great story.  My mom would always bake for weeks before Christmas(and still does).  Now she puts a lot of them in the freezer since she doesn't want them to spoil before she can use them.  The baking has always been my favorite part of the holidays, just the cleaning up is getting harder all the time LOL.

That is so funny!  I am glad you didn't eat all of them.  I doubt the story would have had a happy ending in that case.

What a cute story!

My husband was 9 years younger than his sister.  She baked cookies for her boyfriend.  She stored them in a roaster until he came to visit.  She was smart enough to attach a small bell to the inside lid of the roaster and caught my husband stealing a cookie from the sound of the bell!  She always made sure her little brother got some cookies too, but "boys will be boys" and he just wanted to sneak one for the challenge!!
