I also miss my grandmother's choc. cake. The cake was just a store bought yellow cake mix. Oh my gosh, the homemade shell icing, made her choc. cake. I've also tried to get her cookbook to find this & my aunt won't even let me look through it why I don't know, she did tell me this wasn't in there. She had tried to duplicate this icing shell its close my kids love it but its not what I remember. I do know she cooked it over the stove & had coccoa in it, she boiled for like maybe 2-3mins then poured the slightly cooled liquid on the cake then let it sit for it to create a light shell(but not like a hard crunchy shell) the icing would melt in your mouth.

My grandmother's traditional Christmas Eve Meal
***from the rural country so this is what I grew up on***
Barbeque Deer quarters with homemade barbeque sauce
Homemade Brunswick Stew made by my grandmother(no receipe
chips, bread, sides, and desserts.

1-2 days before she made all of the grandkids come & help with prepartions. Us girls were in charge of polishing with old english(to this day I hate that smell)
cleaning, etc. The boys were in charge of grinding all of the meats, veggies for the stew. We all hated it back then but wish we would have cherished more of those times today.

If you can find a recipe for Texas sheet cake, the icing for this cake maybe what you are looking for. If not let me know and I'll send you mine.

I hope you get a recipe for your grandmother's icing. I always wonder why relatives won't share recipes. My mother-in-law won't give us the recipe for her mother's sugar cookies.
