The Christmas that stands out most in my mind was when I was 7 yrs old. I had always helped my Aunt in her kitchen but was in love with baking. That Christmas my Aunt Dot gave me a Hamilton Beach Hand Mixer, a square brownie pan, spatula, two round pans, a cupcake tin and a Mary Margaret McBride Cookbook. This was the start of a great love of cooking. My mother was the youngest of 11 kids and was never allowed to cook because they couldn't waste food. As a result, my mother hated cooking and gave me full run of her kitchen. I became the official family cook at 7. It was wonderful! I put myself through Nursing College running a bakery at night (with no cooking school training) and opened a restaurant with my sister all as the result of the basic baking gifts I received at 7 yrs old. Thank you Aunt Dot. It was the best Gift ever....a love of cooking and accomplishment for a 7yr old.
