When my Mother was a young girl growing up in Detroit, Michigan, my Grandmother use make many gifts in order to save money. One of the things Grandma made was fruitcake and she always began her baking on the day after Thanksgiving. My Mother remembered this and when she started her own family in 1951, she plopped my sister in the highchair and began her Holiday baking...only for our family it was cookies - specifically Spritz cookies. Every year, my family gets together and makes Christmas Cookies the day after Thanksgiving. We do more than Spritz, but we always do multiple double batches of Spritz as they are a favorite. They are divided among the families and frozen for quick use during the Christmas season. My sisters and I are all married - my sisters have had children and they are full grown and starting to marry - and the tradition continues! I have moved away from my family to Virginia and if I cannot return to Michigan for Thanksgiving...I fire up my oven and begin my baking on the day after Thanksgiving.
