Every year at Easter my Italian grandmother made her fabulous "Italian Cream Pies. We all waited for it. One year, we were bringing the pie she made for us home, impatient to be able to eat it. My sister and I talked about it all the way home in the car. My mother just kept telling us to have patience.

Well, my mother carried the pie from the car to the back door of our house. Just as she was opening the door, it happened.....watching in horrified slow motion, my sister, my father and myself stood still has the pie slipped from her hands onto the steps! My mother just stood there, then started laughing hysterically.

I ran into the house and got 4 spoons and invoked the "5-second" rule. Luckily, the pie had a top crust on it, so we were able to carefully spoon the bottom crust, which was now on top, and the cream filling into dishes.

Every year after that, we never let my mother carry the pie again!

I also remember a baking disaster. My mother always made the cakes for all occassions and she was fantastic at it. I remember that when someone in the family had any celebration, everyone went to the celebration to honor that person, be it a communion party, baptism, christmas, easter, graduation, any reason to get together. My mother often did the cakes for these occassions. I will never forget the communion cake she baked for a cousins party. It was beautiful and we drove to the party with the cake on the floor of our station wagon. Yep you guessed it, one of us put our foot into the cake forgetting it was on the floor. My mother was very upset, but the damage was fixed as best we could when we got ther, the bad parts cut off and we "ket them eat cake"!!!!
