Part of our holiday ritual each year was making sugar cut-out cookies and decorating them. I look back at this time and I think it was just my Mom’s way of involving 6 young kids in the holiday baking. My brothers quickly out grew this tradition, but my sister and I looked forward to this all day ritual each holiday season. We would mix up all the ingredients, roll out the dough and then make cookie angels, Santa’s, snowmen, bells, wreaths and whatever new cookie cutter we had gotten that year. Once the cookies had been baked and cooled, decorating them was the best part. Royal icing, food coloring and sprinkles were our decorating tools and we would take each cookie and make it a masterpiece (at least we thought they were). At holiday gatherings, my Mom would make these glorious trays of all the baked goods we had made, and never left out our decorated sugar cut out cookies. I have to chuckle, because I am pretty sure those cookies weren’t the most eye-appealing or appetizing looking goodies, but they always had their spot on the tray. I even remember one year, we got started late in the day mixing and rolling out the cookies, so we had to leave the decorating to the next day. We left the cookies sitting on the kitchen table, so the next morning we could get right to decorating them. We got up the next morning, and all the cookies were gone, only crumbs left!! Our dog Tigger had helped himself to all the sugar cookies, so we had to start all over with round 2 of the sugar cookie cut-outs that year. Very timing consuming that year, but a valuable baking lesson learned…never leave baked goods on the kitchen table; because “dogs like cookies too”.

My dog decided to nibble on a cake I had cooling on the table. At first I blamed the kids, until I caught him! I learned to keep the baking out of his reach. (His nose could just reach the table). Our dogs do love their sweets!

My 15 year old Dalmation knows when I bake. She will sit in front of the oven and bark at the cooling cookies or brownies until someone gives her one. I usually make a few smaller ones with no chocolate chips especially for her!

It would be great to bake a recipe of special cookies or biscuits that are for dogs.

They even have a dog bakery in my town.  I guess they cook for cats too, but who wants a sardine cookie?  LOL

I love the dog stories!  I had a cat who always knew when I was mixing frosting for a cake.  He was always right there looking at me and wanting a taste.  I'm still amazed at how he knew it was the frosting.  He never came running when I was mixing other things.

My little dog has quite a nose. We had just had her a few months and Christmas time came around. We exchange gifts with our neighbors and put their gift to us under the tree. A day later we went to town and left her and our other little dog at home. When we got back She had opened the gift and opened the hot chocolate packet and ate the hot chocolate mix. She smelled that chocolate through a box ,wrapping paper and the package the mix was in. Needless to say we don't put anthing she isn't suppose to have at her level.

My dog will eat anything except peas. He will fish them out with his nose and leave them.
