This was the first Thanksgiving that I was preparing a turkey,
so as you can imagine that task seemed absolutely overwhelming.
Growing up my mother never wanted us kids in the kitchen while
she was cooking, so I had never had any exposure to the unprepared bird.

There was I was alone with the bird. I knew from eating turkey
there was supposed to be stuffing inside and I knew from overheard
stories that the body cavity was supposed to be empty. I read
somewhere about the gibblets that should be inside the cavity in
a bag, so I used a pair of tongs to look inside.

To my utter astonishment, I did not find the bag of gibblets but something
even more horrific! It was a long piece of meat, cyclindrical in shape and
approx 5 inches long!! I thought the poor bird had private pieces of himself
not only cut off but now shoved up inside of himself!!! I was indignantly, steaming mad
for the apparent disrespect towards the body of this traditional
bird. I mean it is the symbol of the freakin season for the love
of pete! What is this world coming to?!
I Was so upset and disgusted that I called every women I knew and vented on them.
None of my friends and family members that I had called really said anything, I was to learn
later that their silence was due to their laughing so hard on the other
end of the line!

Finally, one of my friends called who I had not even called yet and told me the awful embarassing truth that
the mysterious member of the turkey was not what I had thought at all,
it was the neck! Still to this day almost every Thanksgiving someone
in the kitchen brings up the story of Mr. Turkey.

This is SO FUNNY I remember my "first turkey" my husbands elderly grandfather lived with us and it was our first Thanksgiving, he got a neighbor to take him to the store when I was at work and I came home to a 30 POUND turkey in the fridge and had no idea what to do! Thankfuly my wonderful Aunt came to my house and helped me when we were done we had a bird we couldn't lift into the over but my 6'4" husband had no problem we ate turkey EVERY WAY possible for 2 weeks. We just couldn't afford to waste anything.
