It was my birthday, and the girls were just old enough to want to do something on their own. They decided they were going to make mama a cake for her birthday. Now Mama took charge of the stove, heating it up etc. and then let them go for it. As far as they were concerned Mama trusted them with a big job, Mama simply didn't want to watch!! That was ok though, for they had a chance to do something for Mom. From the living room I could hear the noise of the pans, and yes even the mixer. The call came from the kitchen to come put the cake in the oven. As I pushed the door open, the sight was priceless. At the table were these tow giant white things standing on two feet. Flour was in the hair, and everywhere! But, those cake pans had cake batter in them. I put them in the oven, and was ushered out. They were going to do the cleaning. When the timer went off I went in and got the cake out of the oven, stepping over towels that were mopping up water that had spilled, and trying very hard not to laugh at the now wet little snow men or should I say girls. I encouraged them going up and changing and thanked them for their hard work. With promises of them frosting it themselves, they left has Mama took up the cleaning up task. When it was time to frost the cake, I left again leaving the making for frosting out on the table, and the calling cake layers on the rack.
Once again hearing sounds from the living room," Oh no, pick it up Cissy quick. Don't tell mama . Then just a few minutes later out they come holding their prize with great pride. They had dropped one of the layers, and broke it, so they piled it on the top, and frosted it with their own version of frosting, all over the cake and the dish. Since then I have been recipient of many beautiful cakes, but I will always remember those smiling faces, and the volcano cake.

I hope you got a picture of their cake. It just adds to the memory when (as they get older) they can see their masterpiece.

That's cute. As hard as it may have been to stay out of the kitchen, I commend you for doing so. I myself have been in that position a time or two when my kids have made cookies. It's a good experience for them and it build their self-esteem to do something by themselves whether it turns out perfectly or not.
