We all love to cook in our family and love to include our grandchildren in the process. Our dearest moments are those shared by four generations sitting at Sunday dinner. We are blessed to have Great-Grandma, Stella, living nearby. These days, with the children old enough to share thoughts and ideas, it is truly wonderful. We never know what to expect! They light up our lives.

In keeping with wanting the children to have a love of cooking and sharing, Grandpa Mike while babysitting for our then 8 year old granddaughter, Madison, decided to surprise Grandma Laura (me) by baking a batch of sugar cookies.

He and Madi searched for a recipe from our cookbook collection, donned their aprons. gathered all the ingredients needed, measured the dry ingredients, (the evidence of which took several days to clean!) preheated the ovens, prepared the baking pans and got to work.

Madi loved cracking the eggs and helping to mix ingredients and Grandpa Mike pitched in to mix when the going got tough. The dough was placed onto the cookie sheets as directed and placed in the oven to bake. They waited, impatiently, peeking often through the glass oven door at their work in progress.

Alas, the results were less than stellar! When I returned home I truly was surprised. Grandpa Mike and Madi sheepishly offered the results of their labor; really hard, somewhat round but nicely browned lumps. "Don't know what could have happened!" they said. "We followed the directions exactly!" "Must be the ovens, they're old." I dutifully tasted (as they already had) the "sugar cookie" that was offered. "Hmmm, what's this? Surely a cracker of sorts." "No, we made sugar cookies" they said. "Funny" said I, "but you seem to have forgotten the sugar!"

The next cooking foray was under Grandma Laura's supervision!!!
