Poison Cookies

My sons are grown now but when they were young, I baked often because I felt homebaked cookies were better than store bought ones with all the preservatives. When they were little I always let them "taste test" a cookie right after I baked them no matter what time of day it was. This was a special treat, because in our house, treats were reserved for after meals (until they were old enough to go to school and got an after school snack). When they were old enough to learn, they started baking with me. They learned that I always reserved a small amount of whatever add-ins (chocolate chips, M&M's, raisins, etc.) I was using for the cookies till the end. This was for the dough at the end that might be cheated on the add-in. The result was that the last batch of cookies was usually loaded with chips or whatever I was using. The boys soon learned from helping me bake to save their "taste test" cookie for the last batch. Somewhere along the line, one of them developed the idea that one was not enough (you know how kids have to push the limits) and came up with the idea that cookies might be poison (they were VERY into GI Joe) so they had to test another one to save Mom & Dad's life. So started the tradition of eating the second cookie no matter what the time when baking. My sons still laugh about it when we are together and I serve home made cookies and will still grab a second one to make sure they're "not poison".

Eating another cookie to save the lives of mom and dad is certainly a VERY good reason for eating cookies, but, then again, any reason or excuse is a good one!

My boys didn't think of "poison" as an excuse for eating another cookie but they were very into doing a "quality check" with any baked goods.

My children have always tested my cookies, and declared them "poison" so that they could have them all to themselves! Once, when a friend from a foreign country was over, and they declared my cookies "poisonous" (the ultimate compliment in my household)--the friend was horrified! This person couldn't believe that I was making cookies that had poison in them and had been planning to give them to some function or another. I'm still not sure if our explanation was satisfactory or truly understood...
