I have always loved to bake and create my own recipes, and for some reason I have always been very competitive. I began entering baking contests, county fairs and so on. One of the local malls was holding a best cookie bake-off, so HEY! That was right up my alley. I immediately got into the kitchen and began to create(heaven forbid that I should ever use the same recipe twice for competition). After much laboring I had created two very different Chocolate Chip cookie recipes and plated them up, heading to the mall with my mother and 3 month old baby in tow. I filled out all the paper work while my mom and son waited on the side. At the entry table there was some sort of excitement over my entry form. The ladies were passing it among themselves and staring and pointing at me. Needless to say I was more than a little confused. Having been a baker for several years I knew I had filled everything out properly and my entry was within all the published guidelines. I turned and looked back at my mom with a confused shrug, and she gave me one of those "I don't know looks". After a few moments an official looking woman came over with my form. "Mrs. Fields", she reached out her hand and I shook it with a nod. "You do realize that this is non-professional competition right?" I gave her a very confused look and assured her that I did know that. After a couple of questions she left and soon came back I had been disqualified from the competition, but my cookies were delicious according to the judges. I had been the victim of mistaken identity and I never could convince them that I was not Debbie Fields the cookie lady, but someone who happened to share her name and passion for baking. So Thank You Mrs. Fields! I look nothing like her, but it has happened more than once now. If I want to enter a baking competition I almost have to use my maiden name or know that I might get disqualified.
