Toll House cookies have been a favorite in our family through many years of ups and downs. My grandmother made the best version that was enjoyed fresh from the oven, at her home, and traveled in tins to our house at least once a month.
We do have a funny story about how Grandma made her cookies!! I guess she had a big rubberband around the bag of chocolate chips on this occasion. She had the recipe memorized, and must have been in a hurry that particular day. She went through the usual routine of sifting the flour and measuring the sugar. The ingredients were all put together. When cleaning up as the first batch was baking, she misplaced that rubberband. She didn't think much of it, the counter was clean, the cookies were baking and her first tray was cooling on the rack. The rest of the day went on like any other. Several days went by. Grandma and Grandpa came to our house to visit, bearing a large tin of chocolate chip filled morsels. We couldn't wait to try them. I will never forget the surprise I had!! I took a bite and part of the cookie stretched away from my mouth!! I wasn't sure what was going on!! I finally managed to get one bite as Grandma walked into the kitchen looking at me and the cookie. She said, "Oh, so that is where that rubberband went!! I thought I lost it!" I guess it had jumped into the batter and just baked right into my cookie!! WE never let Grandma forget about that batch! It was a family joke for years!!
Grandma has been gone for over 12 years, but I am lucky to have a teenage daughter who carries on the tradition of baking Toll House cookies!!....without the rubberbands!!!
