I bought a new condo near my family in Harrison, Ohio; and decided it would be nice to bake 15 dozen Toll House chocolate chip cookies for them for Christmas. I had not moved much of my furniture to this condo because I was still living in Columbus, Ohio at the time. BUT, I had borrowed an ironing board from my sister; and I don't have that much counter space; and, remember, I'm making 15 dozen cookies. Where to cool them all? A few kitchen towels and wax paper and, YEP, instant cooling rack. Please see the attached photo.

I believe my family laughed more about the ironing board than any other story that holiday. I captioned the picture when I put it in my scrapbook as "You might be a redneck..."

My tip for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe in the world; as in Toll House? Use DARK brown sugar. Yum, yum.

I like the "You might be a redneck...." caption. Very clever & approperate. Great way to expand counter space, too.

thanks for the idea. i make carmel corn covered with p.b. and choclate. i do enough for 20 people and that is a lot of corn of cookie trays. i cover my dining room table and kitchen table with it and try to figure out where to put more of it so the choc. and p.b. can set up on it.

That's a great idea! I would much rather use my ironing board to cool cookies than to iron. ;-)

Marilyn, Being a former Ohio gal myself, I admire your "where there is no way, make a way" thought process, by golly!! Necessity IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION. Funny how a story will be remembered because you were determined enough to do whatever it took............. Oh yes, I still iron, (I even have a wooden-footed ironing board , an antique?), but it does pile up sometimes. Deloris N. Louisville, Ky.

I think it is great that you thought of your family first and baked even before you had all of your stuff.

I used that trick this past summer, when we moved in to an old farmhouse that was in desparate need of some TLC.

I do think this is the best use for a ironing board. I think I will try this with my 5 and 7 year olds when the trays cool they can take the cookies off and put them on the board since it can be lowered to their height. I will just have to keep the dog out of the kitchen though, he's a sweet tooth.

Loved the story. Isn't it amazing the things we can come up with when we have to improvize?

Cute story, and I agree with the gal who thought it was neat that you thought of your friends and family and baking Christmas treats even before the rest of your stuff was in your new home. You're obviously a "giver" and I'll bet you're a great baker, too!
