Heartburn Cookies!

I had received a peanut butter recipe from a friends years before. I loved her cookies and had wanted to make them for quite some time. Now here I was married years later with my first son. I thought it would be a good idea to prove to my husband that I was a good cook and baker.
I pulled out the recipe and read the ingredients. I checked my pantry, I had everything on hand! Just needed to find the butter. I looked in the fridge, sure enough there was what I needed. But it was'nt also! It was butter, but salted. I looked at my recipe card. It called for salt. I just figured, I wont add that! it will be fine! So I continued making the cookies. They baked, they looked and smelled wonderful!
My husband could smell them through out the house and came to kitchen he had to have one! And then he took a big bite!
"Yuck!" he yelled as he spit it out! "What did you put in these! Salt?"
"Yes" I said. "It called for some." Not wanting to tell the truth. I was hurt that he did not like them. He could see that so he put another in his mouth. This time he didnt say much. Just reached for some milk and had another.
"They're just a little salty. Its a little strange."
Why he continued to eat them was puzzling to me. As the one I had tasted, was awful!
That night as he tried to sleep he was awakened with the worst case of heartburn he had ever had!He was unable to sleep comfortably due to the heartburn. But he didnt wake me to tell me. He felt bad. Here I had tried my hardest to make something for him and it was awful. He didnt want to hurt my feelings!
The next day I threw out the cookies. They were terrible and un-edible! No mention was made that day of the cookies.
Months later I again went to make cookies. My husband asked if I was making heartburn cookies. "Heartburn cookies? Whats that?" That was when he filled me in on what had happened! I felt awful and vowed never to make that mistake again.
I now always double check my ingredients! I always buy unsalted butter (dont know why I bought it in the first place?). And still have never made peanut butter cookies again!

Ah yes, they call for unsalted butter for a reason! As it is usually more expensive, when I go to the store, I buy one at a time. by the time an occasion comes, I am well stocked with it. Not a lot of money to put out at one time.

What a shame that cookies would cause heartburn.  Even worse that you had to throw the rest out. Frown

So sorry to hear that the cookies caused heartburn and you had to throw out the rest.  I'm sure the next time you made them with the correct butter, he loved them!

I can't imagine the amount of salt in "regular" butter causing a problem, especially if you omitted the amount called for.

At least you are still making cookies.  We've all had baking blunders.

Thanks for sharing Lupe.  I always buy salted butter and leave out the extra salt in a recipe.  But maybe the peanut butter brand had more salt than usual?

I've never noticed a difference when making cookies, just lucky I guess.

Don't give up.  Try again.  I always use unsalted butter to bale woth.  We use ICBIN butter for our meals.

Lupe,  It's time to take the challenge and make peanut butter cookies again!  Make them when Hubby isn't around and keep the tums handy!

I had a similar thing happen only I forgot an ingredient.  I accidently made pecan pie without the sugar...literally I forgot to put  it in.  I didn't realize it until family had started to eat the pie.  I noticed that everyone was asking for extra whipped cream on their pie all of a sudden.  Then I started to think back to my baking and couldn't remember adding the sugar.  Thank goodness for the sweetness of the karo syrup and sweetened whipped cream.
As far as salted vs unsalted btr, I leave out the salt if I use the salted butter.
